A kitschy landmark on California's Central Coast.
You can't help but notice this sprawling hotel by the side of the freeway because it's shockingly pink. Fans of tongue-in-cheek design or deliciously bad taste will love it here. Inside the complex are 109 surreal theme rooms, none of which are alike, but all of which will make most tourists at least giggle. Some rooms even have gas fireplaces, balconies, and rock or waterfall showers. But most are of only average motel quality. It's the fantastically garish themes that you're paying for. A few are pretty wild, like the Caveman Room, which has rock walls, floors, and ceilings, and a leopard-print bedspread. One of the more tasteful is the Highway Suite, which has an open-air balcony and a large rock fireplace. A favorite with retirees and families, the Madonna Inn experience includes a bakery, coffee shop, steakhouse and plenty of souvenir shops. There's a small day spa offering massage services by appointment. It's a popular spot for Sunday brunch, as well as special events including weddings, family reunions and conventions.
