Owner David Fink restored the 1929 property to reflect the mood of its European-style architecture and capture the village-in-the-woods feel of Carmel-by-the-Sea. There are only twenty guest rooms, each featuring original black and white photography by Helmut Horn. The rooms, which all have French windows, are spacious and bathrooms (some with soaking tubs) come with heated floors. The property's attention to detail extends to the doorknobs, which are antiques.
Downstairs, Aubergine, the twelve-table restaurant, is the perfect platform for highly personalized fine dining. It has been a GAYOT's Top 40 Restaurant in the U.S. since 2014. The restaurant's impressive wine cellar sits below the inn's courtyard. Guests receive complimentary breakfast every morning. With a location just blocks from the bustling main drag, Ocean Avenue, L'Auberge Carmel is an easy stroll from shopping and additional dining experiences.
