The Monkey Tree Hotel

2388 E. Racquet Club Rd. (N. Farrell Dr.) Palm Springs CA

Cheerful, playful style complements Palms Springs' distinctive casual vibe.

Set against San Jacinto Mountain views with mature palm trees surrounding the enclosed pool courtyard, the intimate, 16-room Monkey Tree makes its home on an acre of space in the north end of Palm Springs, allowing guests plenty of room to unwind. The hotel’s Scandinavian-style, hot-and-cold hydro spa — the first and only of its kind in the area — is a big selling point (that and the lack of a resort fee). There is also a large, heated saltwater pool for savoring sunny desert days.

Designed by architect Albert Frey in 1960, the property attracted a prestigious list of guests in the years that followed, including Lucille Ball, Gene Wilder, Marilyn Monroe, Bob Hope and Eric Clapton. Rumor has it, John F. Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe rendezvoused in Room 15, now called the “Presidential Suite.” Renovations have restored many of the original mid-century modern details to their former retro glory, and today, the stylish rooms and suites now show off bright white linens with punches of colorful accessories purchased locally and cool tiled floors to counteract the arid desert heat. A daily continental breakfast of fresh house-made scones and granola, yogurt, fruit and hard-boiled eggs is part of the deal.
