Caliente Tropics Resort

411 E. Palm Canyon Dr. (S. Via Salida) Palm Springs CA

Tropical is topical at this Rat Pack favorite.

A classic example of a 1960s Polynesian-style motor hotel, complete with tiki gods and tropical artifacts, this historic property runs the risk of being kitsch, but somehow rises above that distinction. The centerpiece pool was once frequented by Elvis, Nancy Sinatra and Anna Nicole Smith, and the lounge attracted members of the Rat Pack back in the day. Opened in 1964 by a family reputed to be a notorious con team, the hotel was headed for ruin when it was rescued at the turn of the millennium. After a multi-million dollar renovation it now attracts a cool clientele that appreciates the authenticity that lingers in the relaxed boutique setting. The tastefully and simply decorated guest rooms and suites have such unusual accessories as custom towels from Thailand, as well as all the basics. The outdoors is where it's really at here, with cabanas and umbrellas for added shade, a twelve-person spa tub and a poolside bar that keeps things shaken and stirred all weekend long. The retractable lawn is a great landing space for a picnic or toss of the Frisbee. An extended continental breakfast includes treats such as Tazo teas. Pets are welcome.
