San Remo Hotel

2237 Mason St. (Chestnut St.) San Francisco CA

A historic, European-style inn in bustling North Beach.

This lovely, restored Victorian hotel was built by the founder of Bank of America to house maritime workers displaced by the earthquake of 1906. Today, it remains a throwback to an earlier, simpler time. All 62 rooms share bathrooms, with the exception of the rooftop penthouse, which also happens to offer killer views of the surrounding cityscape. Rooms are decorated with antiques and include brass or iron beds, wicker furniture, armoires and pedestal sinks. Among the notable touches, guests will find claw-footed tubs, redwood wainscoting and pull-chain toilets. There are no televisions or telephones, though. An on-site bar serves light snacks.
