Best Hotels in San Francisco & Bay Area
Innovative design meets Victorian flair at this legendary San Francisco classic.
Once the most traditional of San Francisco's grand hotels, this historic building was remodeled by avant-garde designers Philippe Starck and Ian Schraeger. Instead of restoring the property's formal character, the duo sought to revitalize its Victorian traditions while retaining its rich spirit. The result is a breathtaking blend of 21st-century technology with opulent sophistication that captures San Francisco's vibrant contrasts.
The lobby wows with furnishings by Salvador Dali and Ray and Charles Eames, while the iconic Redwood Room blends its classic bar (made from a solid piece of 2,000-year-old redwood) with high-tech digital art projections. Hand-blown Murano glass lamps are among the treasures in the Velvet Room, where breakfast is served each morning. Small bites and gourmet comfort food are on the dinner menu in the Redwood Room. In addition, the cozy, clubby Living Room just off the lobby is a popular hangout. All 373 accommodations are decorated in light, fresh colors and feature amenities such as flat-screen televisions, Malin+Goetz bath products and spacious work areas. Although there's no spa, guests can book treatments in their rooms; a small fitness center is open around the clock, and complimentary bikes are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
