A modern merger of the wine country and the wild west.

1880 Union Hotel

The Old West meets wine country at this historic landmark in Los Alamos, a rustic strip along Highway 101 between Buellton and Santa Maria. Character abounds, with fourteen unique rooms decorated to capture the feel of the nineteenth century. What’s surprising is how well the hotel succeeds in accomplishing this goal. Creaking stairs serve as the appropriate voice of the old gal. Schmaltz is in short supply; instead of a hammy Disney-style scene, you’ll find locals and guests tipping back a few at the Union Saloon. Some rooms share a bath, which some guests may find too old-fashioned. On the opposite end of the hospitality spectrum, the Presidential Suite boasts a private bath with Jacuzzi tub and dual-headed showers. There’s also a flat-screen TV, fireplace and veranda overlooking the hotel’s garden. In addition to character, the property’s finest asset is its restaurant, which in 2011 lured chef Bobby Ostini away from the nearby Hitching Post.
