El Capitan Canyon
Camping with a safety net and loads of extras.
Near the beautiful beaches north of Santa Barbara, families cram into this luxury campground to enjoy the semi-rustic life. Along with swimming in the heated pool, guests can go horseback riding, hiking, mountain biking, kayaking or even take surfing lessons. A gift shop sells everything you might need for an active holiday, from sunscreen to toys. The 26 safari tents are built on wooden decks and covered with canvas roofs. Inside, rustic willow beds are draped with down comforters, while individual firepits sit just outside the door for those who want to barbecue. Communal bathrooms are nearby. Even more popular are the 100 fully loaded, fully electrified cedar cabins. Private bathrooms, kitchenettes and telephones come along with all that electricity for those who can't imagine traveling without a hair dryer. Some cabins even have whirlpool tubs and fireplaces. The largest boasts a loft and sleeps up to six. The Canyon Market and Deli sells supplies for simple meals and picnic lunches.
