Santa Ynez Valley Marriott
An efficient roadside hotel in the wine country.
In an admittedly unattractive location just off Highway 101, the Marriott is conveniently placed for excursions into Santa Barbara's wine country. It's also a refreshingly straightforward chain hotel where you can avoid the kitsch of countless other properties in the nearby Danish enclave of Solvang. The Marriott's elongated white buildings with red-tiled roofs are dramatically backed by the Santa Ynez Mountains. The refurbished lobby opens onto an expansive outdoor patio, perfect for hosting events. Some of the accommodations haven't been recently renovated and still have darkish 1970s décor, so choose carefully. All rooms have wireless high-speed Internet access, coffee makers and bathtubs with spray jets, while suites have sofa beds, making the latter a better choice for families. Locals frequent the Marriott for its buffet and sports bar with billiards table; guests enjoying relaxing around the outdoor heated pool.
