The Stanley Hotel

This grand, old hotel reigns in a stunning location right next to Rocky Mountain National Park.

The stately Stanley Hotel in Colorado

The Rocky Mountains loom large over this white, four-story hotel that overlooks the tourist town of Estes Park. Built in 1909 by the inventor of the Stanley Steamer automobile, this property has hosted presidents, princes and movie stars. Best-selling author Stephen King was inspired to write "The Shining" after vacationing here, and the hotel's haunted history is a draw (guided paranormal tours are offered). The 140 guests rooms and suites are large and comfortable, with modern lodge furnishings, pillow-top mattresses, 42-inch flat-screen TVs and large sash windows that open to let in the cool mountain air.

Additional accommodations can be found at the Aspire Residences, 40 self-catering suites with full kitchens and washers/dryers. In addition, The Lodge at The Stanley is a 40-room boutique hotel located right next door to the main hotel. But no matter which lodging you choose, you're welcome to enjoy all of the property's delights, such as toasting the mountain sunsets from the long, west-facing veranda or the deck chairs lining the pool. Dinner is served at Cascades Restaurant & Lounge (the menu features Colorado game), and at Table, a pop-up dining venue hosting guest chefs and winemakers. As for lingering over an evening drink, the Whiskey Bar has the state's largest offering of whiskeys, bourbons, and scotch. The 29,000 square feet of meeting and event venues includes the Billiards Room and Concert Hall. During the summer the hotel is full of vacationing couples and families; winters are a more quiet time to visit.
