Florida House Inn

20 S. Third St. (Center Ave.) Fernandina Beach FL

Charming lodgings touted as Florida's oldest surviving hotel.

The exterior of this inn brings to mind visions of weary travelers of yore, pulling up in a carriage in search of warm hospitality, warm food and a warm, comfortable bed. Dating back to 1857, the building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It underwent a complete restoration when it was purchased by the present innkeepers in 1990. It attracts a classic, older (50-plus) B&B crowd. The inn houses 15 bedrooms, all with private baths. Ten have working fireplaces, and many have claw-footed tubs or Jacuzzis. Notable furnishings include four-poster beds, iron beds, quilts and handmade rugs. Every room accesses one of the porches that sweeps around the perimeter of the building. The brick courtyard is landscaped with camellia bushes and shaded by a 200-year-old oak. A friendly, intimate pub provides a venue for drinks, socializing and darts. Meals are served boarding house style, and include such local favorites as country fried chicken and homemade biscuits. The inn is in the historic district, within walking distance of antiques shops and the marina, where guests can charter a boat to see dolphins or sea turtles. Pets are welcome.
