Fisher Island Hotel & Resort
A lavish, former Vanderbilt estate on a private island.
In 1919 developer Carl Fisher and magnate William Vanderbilt made an exchange: Fisher's yacht Eagle for the other's 216-acre winter island estate. Today, nestled amid the magnificent abodes of the wealthy elite, this celebrity favorite is home to a charming community of faithfully restored Vanderbilt-era villas. Since access to the island is by ferry, yacht, helicopter or seaplane, privacy is guaranteed. Accommodations include Cottages, Villas and Residences. The lavishly furnished suites offer views of Biscayne Bay and the Miami skyline, and guests use complimentary golf carts to shuttle between cottages and around the grounds. Villa interiors feature French doors opening out onto private patio courtyards with individual hot tubs built directly into the ground. Vanderbilt's daughter once lived in the three-bedroom, three-bath Rosemary's Cottage, which has marble floors, a fireplace, an armoire and cathedral ceilings --- and that's just in the master bedroom. Elsewhere, antique furniture, paintings and chintz flourish. Superb dining ranges from Café Tangier in the Vanderbilt Mansion to the casual Beach Club and Sunset Bar. Guests have full use of the club's tennis courts and golf course, plus the huge 22,000-square-foot Spa Internazionale with its fitness center and beauty salon.
