A stylishly retro budget hotel.
This 43-room hotel was one of the country's first motor lodges before it was redesigned by Brit fashion legend Barbara Hulanicki into a hip boutique hotel with a sixties retro look. The outdoor pool area, with a rock garden and koi pond, was fashioned by landscape architect Donald Murakami. The on-site wine bar attracts a young and fashionable crowd, with drinks priced accordingly. The rooms, while imaginatively decorated with specially made mahogany furniture, still hint at their motel roots --- they're small and have very little storage space. The bathrooms feature interesting mosaic floors, but the fixtures are aging. The rooms' major assets are the beds, with Serta pillow top mattresses and luxurious Italian Anichini 300 thread count bed and bath linens, along with Aveda bath products. Tech amenities include flat panel televisions, complimentary Wi-Fi and CD players. Nice touches such as lavender-scented closets with beaded curtains and Hawaiian coffee served at breakfast make this a stylish budget option. Overall, the hotel is best suited to people for whom price is more important than amenities. And keep in mind that the neighborhood can be a bit iffy.
