Shades of Green on Walt Disney World Resort
Eligible military members and their families rank a spiffy resort all their own.
This resort isn't for everyone, literally speaking of course. Affectionately referred to as SOG, the resort is open only to active or retired military members, their spouses, disabled veterans and Medal of Honor recipients. With a $92 million re-do, the rooms accommodate up to eight family members with standard rooms priced according to rank and family suites priced the same regardless of rank. While not up to Walt Disney Worlds posh standards, standard rooms have a table and chair set, a pull-out, queen size sofa bed, mini-refrigerator, coffee maker and in-room safe. There are a limited number of family suites with a king bedroom and two-pull out sofa beds in the living area. Many rooms have been refitted to meet ADA standards offering extra wide doorways, higher toilets, roll-in showers and lowered bath counters. Amenities include two outdoor heated pools, lighted tennis courts, an arcade and children's playground. A mini BX (Base Exchange) sells snacks and sundries or guests can enjoy an Italian meal at Mangino's restaurant offering an extensive wine list. Enjoy coffee and danish at the coffee bistro or relax at two pubs serving hamburgers and other American fare. Guests can use the free shuttle transportation to Disney parks and Downtown Disney and can arrange transportation to other entertainment venues for a fee.
