Shalimar Cottages & Motel
An informal site with spectacular views.
There's a pleasant casualness about this property that is suited to families and long-term stays. Residents from nearby mainland towns tend to come over for weekends and a reasonably priced respite from the day-to-day. The shelling on Sanibel is excellent, and the island is a national wildlife refuge with nearly 5,000 acres set aside as a bird sanctuary. More than 200 species have been observed here. With just 33 guest rooms, this hotel is an intimate alternative to the island's larger lodgings. Keep in mind, though, that with size you also sacrifice a few niceties. There is no daily maid service, and guests are asked to bring their used towels to the front desk in exchange for clean ones. Cottages include fully equipped kitchens, and modem hookups are available. Guests can hang out in the heated pool or rent a bike and pedal around. There is a basketball hoop on the grounds---the owner is from Indiana.
