Shellmont Inn

821 Piedmont Ave. NE (8th St. NE) Atlanta GA

This classic midtown manse combines Victorian splendor and contemporary amenities.

Shellmont Inn

This handsome Victorian home was designed by Boston-born, Atlanta-reared architect Walter T. Downing for a prominent Atlanta physician. It is one of the few remaining residential buildings by this important nineteenth-century architect, a distinction that earned it a place on the National Register of Historic Places. Giving the inn its name, a scallop shell motif adorns the façade. Significant Victorian details within include a dramatic stained-glass window in the entry stairwell. Period-style stenciling enhances the authentic ambience. The inn offers five guest rooms and a private cottage, and the Victorian theme continues in each room’s décor, while contemporary amenities have been installed. Two rooms have single whirlpool tubs while another has a two-person whirlpool tub. A gourmet kitchen added in 2013 allows guests to enjoy their breakfast at the kitchen bar, if they choose, rather than in the dining room. With three koi-filled ponds, the gardens are a restful enclave. The inn caters to couples and business travelers, and is a favorite of international guests seeking an authentic American South experience. You might find yourself enjoying breakfast with travelers from Europe, Asia or South America. Gourmet breakfast is included in room rates.
