Napili Kai Beach Resort

A taste of Old Hawaii south of Kapalua Resort.

This unusual 163-unit facility is actually half hotel and half condo complex --- located right on the sands of one of the island's best snorkeling beaches, Napili Bay. On the one hand, the units are a bit smaller than those we usually identify as condos; on the other hand, there's no room service, which is one of the features that makes a hotel a hotel. In any case, this is a very pleasant place to stay, especially since zoning bylaws prevent any structures in this neighborhood from being built taller than the height of a coconut tree. Spread out across ten tropical acres, the Napili Kai has eleven two-story buildings, four swimming pools, a big Jacuzzi, an eighteen-hole putting green, a seasonal kids club and an island-style spa and salon. Many of the units have air-conditioning and full kitchens. The Sea House Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner; we love nibbling on the tasty pupus at sunset. Entertainment at the resort centers around the Masters of Slack Key island music concert that takes place each week on the hotel grounds. This complex is more about Hawaii than most of the new resorts; the nonprofit Napili Kai Foundation teaches Hawaiiana to children and puts on a delightful hula show every Tuesday evening.
