History and charm on the Hamakua Coast.

Waipio Wayside Inn

Located about an hour from the Kaneole-Kona International or Hilo airports, this historic inn resides amidst the lush tropical landscape of the Hamakua Coast. The area was used as plantation land for years, growing everything from sugar cane to macadamia nuts. The inn was built in 1932 for a sugar cane plantation superintendent and is filled with history and character. It boasts five bedrooms showcasing details such as hand-made Hawaiian quilts, rare antique furniture and original artwork. The Chinese and Plantation Rooms have bathtubs for long, relaxing soaks. The inn offers modern amenities like data ports, and there's a large TV space with a DVD library in the common area. The grounds are surrounded by a white picket fence and graced with a garden gazebo that will make you feel as if you're staying in a lovely private home. Fresh flowers and organic breakfasts elevate this property above the island's many small inns.
