Club Quarters, Wacker at Michigan

75 E. Wacker Dr. (N. Michigan Ave.) Chicago IL

Business meets pleasure, and historic architecture, on the Magnificent Mile.

Chicagoans call Mather Tower “the inverted spyglass” because of its unique shape, which consists of a twenty-story rectangular box beneath a 21-story octagonal tower. While they’re in town, however, visitors call it “home,” as the restored building --- built in 1928 and a Chicago Historic Landmark since 2001 --- is now occupied by two different lodging properties: The River Hotel occupies the lower, rectangular portion of the building, while the Club Quarters, Wacker at Michigan occupies the upper, octagonal portion. As one might expect in a historic building, rooms here are small, which might turn off some travelers. The cozy accommodations, however, prove plenty comfortable for the business travelers to which the hotel caters. For compromising on space they’re rewarded with a perfect location on the Chicago River --- straddling the Loop business district on one side and the Magnificent Mile shopping district on the other --- and plenty of amenities, including a bi-level club room with a fireplace, an on-site Italian restaurant with al fresco dining and a business center that’s unlike any other thanks to its spot atop a historic marble staircase.
