Hotel St. Helene
Good value and French charm at a hotel built in Napoleon's memory.
The story goes that this cozy hotel was built in memory of Napoleon Bonaparte, who sold Louisiana to the U.S. for $15 million to fund his army. Located next to the Napoleon House, the only bar that plays classical music in town, this renovated (in 2012) hotel is steps away from Jackson Square and the mighty Mississippi River. The contemporary guest rooms and suites boast modern amenities: high-speed Internet, iPod docking stations and flat-screen TVs, along with charming furnishings and 350-thread-count linens. An outdoor pool is a plus. If you can upgrade to a room with a lacy iron balcony overlooking the French Quarter, it's worth the price. Hotel St. Helene serves an upgraded continental breakfast each morning, and the staff aims to please. This place is a great value; that is, if you can find a room available. It books up fast.
