The Pontchartrain Hotel

2031 St. Charles Ave. (Josephine St.) New Orleans LA

This revitalized grand dame blends Old World elegance and gracious Southern hospitality.

The hotel is located in the Garden District on the carnival route

Since its opening in 1927, this hotel has gone through several owners, but it continues to retain its genteel character and understated elegance. Major refurbishments and design renovations have transformed the 106 guest rooms into some of the prettiest in the city, done in fresh European style and featuring king beds, flat-screen TVs and reading nooks.

The hotel is located in the Garden District on the carnival route, and notable guests over the years have included Frank Sinatra, Rita Hayworth, The Doors, U.S. presidents and hometown boy, Tennessee Williams, who penned portions of A Streetcar Named Desire here. Numerous original details like a hand-painted ceiling fresco and the historic Bayou Bar and Silver Whistle Café (with an updated menu) remain. In addition, in the Caribbean Room, existing Charles Reinike murals have been preserved, and the hotel's newest addition, the Hot Tin rooftop bar, is a stunning indoor-outdoor venue with sweeping views of the city. The hotel's dining scene is presided over by New Orleans chef John Besh.
