Renaissance Arts Hotel

700 Tchoupitoulas St. (Girod St.) New Orleans LA

Artistic sensibility in an arts district.

This Marriott specialty hotel lives up to its name with a near obsessive patronage of the arts. The lobby itself feels like a gallery, and in fact has attached to its side a mini-gallery showcasing the work of local favorite Arthur Roger. Streams of natural light flood the lobby by day, while blue lights warm it at night. Works by Ida Kohlmyer, Allison Stewart, Francis X. Pavy and Mitchell Gaudet adorn the rooms, adding an aesthetic sensibility to the environment. Wake-up calls greet guests with art-related trivia. For serenity, you can enjoy the second-floor sculpture garden, displaying pieces by outsider and folk artists. To add to the arts-district feel, hallways are lined in clapboard paneling, echoing the architecture of the city. Because the hotel is fashioned from a converted warehouse, room sizes fluctuate. They feature brick interiors in a loft style with lots of natural light, modern lamps and beds with high, patterned headboards. They also have high-speed Internet access (for $12.95 a day) and work desks with Herman Aeron Miller chairs. The fitness center, which sits on the top of the fifth floor along with the pools, is roomy and has TVs, locker rooms and steam rooms. Chef Rene Bajeux presides over the well regarded Rene’ Bistrot, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
