Inn of the Governors

101 W. Alameda St. (Don Gaspar Ave.) Santa Fe NM

Personal service, solid value and a superb location near the Historic Santa Fe Plaza.

Major renovations in the past two years have transformed an already pleasant old-fashioned downtown property into an upscale but still reasonably priced winner. The Inn of the Governors sits just opposite the small trickle of water that runs through downtown, otherwise known as the Santa Fe River---it's a short walk north of the State Capitol building, northeast of the funky Guadalupe District, and south of the historic Santa Fe Plaza and its many fine restaurants, galleries, and shops. An old-world Colonial Mexican theme pervades the spacious rooms, which have hand-painted folk art, local tinwork, rustic-looking armoires and bedside tables, colorful Southwestern fabrics, leather armchairs, and---in many cases---woodburning kiva-style fireplaces. Many have beam ceilings, too, as well as small balconies. In-room perks range from Wi-Fi and large televisions to coffeemakers and small refrigerators. Guests enjoy a complimentary afternoon happy hour in the lobby with sherry and hors d'oevres as well as a full breakfast buffet, and the bustling, casual Del Charro restaurant serves up very tasty Southwestern fare---dine on the patio in good weather. A final plus here is the friendly and highly knowledgeable staff.
