A comfortable, historic hotel on the south side of Taos offers plenty of value.
Most of the historic hotels in Taos are up near the center of town, but the Sagebrush sits on the south side, close to the famous San Francisco de Asis Church, which has been immortalized in paintings and photos. In fact, Georgia O'Keeffe once lived briefly at this 1929 property, which is filled with both historic and contemporary Southwestern artwork and crafts. There are 100 rooms and suites set among a few buildings that make up this rambling compound with a conference center and restaurant. Rooms contain relatively simple furnishings but do have colorful Southwestern fabrics and furniture. There are kiva-style fireplaces in most rooms, and the largest suites have king beds, queen Murphy beds, beam ceilings, refrigerators and coffeemakers, and outdoor porches or patios. The restaurant is a reliable bet for local New Mexican fare, and the lounge here has long been famous for its nightly country-western music and dancing. Historic Taos Plaza is just a three-mile drive north. The owners also operate the Comfort Suites next door, and the Quality Inn down the road.
