The Historic Taos Inn

125 Paseo del Pueblo Norte (Bent St.) Taos NM

History and a great location are the big draws at this nicely priced Taos hotel.

Luminaries ranging from Greta Garbo to Robert Redford have spent the night at the Historic Taos Inn, which is also (allegedly) home to some friendly ghosts. This charming, funky hotel is on the main drag, just steps from Taos Plaza and its many galleries and restaurants. It opened in 1936 and has added newer sections over the years, with 44 rooms set among four buildings. Those in the original main building are the most interesting, with their beamed ceilings, thick adobe walls and authentic Southwestern furnishings and artwork. Rooms in the Sandoval House are lighter and airier, and the newer Helen's House has some of the fanciest rooms on the property. A local tradition in Taos is sipping "Cowboy Buddha" margaritas while listening to live music in the hotel's high-ceilinged bar. At Doc Martin's, guests can feast on contemporary regional fare.
