A holistic and historic spa resort in the mountains offers peace and respite from everyday life.

Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs

Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs is something of a pilgrimage site for its devotees. This complex of natural hot springs and contemporary accommodations is one of the longest continuously operating health resorts in the nation. Before it was opened formally as a spa getaway, its natural springs were used for centuries by the area's Pueblo Indians. The resort, in a tiny village about a forty-minute drive from Taos and an hour from Santa Fe, consists of an historic Mission-style main hotel that dates to 1916. Its 19 rooms, as well as a series of more secluded and somewhat more comfy cottages, have received major renovations. Ojo also has 12 more luxurious suites with kiva fireplaces and beam ceilings; half of these have private two-person hot tubs overlooking the surrounding cliffs. Rooms in the main hotel are quite modest and lack showers or bathtubs but do have private water closets; if you stay in these units, you do all your bathing in the resort's communal baths. In addition to the natural-spring pools, there's a spa with all sorts of treatments and massages, and the Artesian Restaurant serves very good, healthful American fare. Ojo Caliente has RV and tent camping, and horseback riding is available. This resort may not to be to everybody's taste, but it's truly a one-of-a-kind destination.
