Low-key European ambience in the heart of the Fire Island nightlife scene.
While there are plenty of places on Fire Island for those looking for a lazy beach break far from the busy-busy of Ocean Beach fun, Clegg's is not one of them. The hotel sits smack dab in the middle of the action. One of the oldest hotels on the island, Clegg's is surrounded by bars, restaurants and all the Fire Island shopping a traveler could ever want. But inside the hotel there's peace to be found; out the windows, the sunrise and sunset views are stunners. The hotel is basically a sprawling house and feels like a big European pensione. Bright and airy, and featuring pleasant ocean blue décor, the double and triple guest rooms offer water views or views of the small town. Guests in these rooms share four sky-lit bathrooms, while studio apartments with garden or ocean views have private baths and sleep four. Although kids stay free, you might want to leave them at home. The area is, to say the least, adult-oriented. Essential Fire Island gear --- bicycles, beach chairs and umbrellas --- are available free of charge.
