East Deck Motel Family Resort
A historic motel with five oceanfront acres.
As a frequent visitor to Montauk in the 1940s, Sam Cox realized the area’s need for apartments. He built some freestanding units in the ’50s, only to watch them blow away during a severe storm. Ever enterprising, he contacted Fred Houseknecht, his son-in-law and local builder. They built an interconnected group of little apartments, bringing this property close to what it still is today---an L-shaped motel run by the Houseknecht family. Only now, the renovated pool is state-of-the-art and yoga enthusiasts greet the sun during morning hatha classes. The property is located right on Ocean Beach, a mile from the shops and restaurants of Montauk. Accommodations are built for value and hominess. Even the smallest room sleeps more than the usual number of people---three, rather than two. The studio efficiencies have stoves, and the one-bedroom apartments with private decks have dining room tables. The clientele has shifted a bit over the years. Today the motel is more of a family establishment, but not everything has changed. The surf out front is still renowned and many a surfer has caught a big break right outside the matter-of-fact lobby.
