Bassett House

A historic house with a gracious host provides the perfect hideaway in Montauk.

Bassett House

Built in 1830, this historic Colonial-style home features 12 distinctive bedrooms. Like so many of the neighboring houses and inns, it has a formal look with a white exterior and black shutters. But this place is hardly an untouchable showcase. It looks and feels lived in, in a good way. Proprietor Michael Bassett has resided here for more than three decades. He cultivates an unpretentious atmosphere and enjoys nothing more than spending time in his kitchen or garden --- one of several spots where guests can indulge in the included breakfast. The house is accessed through a beautifully tended lawn adorned with an old elm tree. While not the most hip or up-to-date, the living room is warm and inviting, with floral sofas and Oriental hangings. Eight rooms have private bathrooms, two come equipped with fireplaces and one has a whirlpool spa. All are decorated with the owner’s finds from his travels and antique yard sale wanderings. Guests can also discover their own one-of-a-kind finds at the yard sales and antique shops around town. Pets are welcome, but make sure to mention Rover in advance.
