Hotel 17

225 E. 17th St. (Third Ave.) New York NY

A kitschy, low-cost and comfy hotel.

This hotel is located on a serene and leafy block. If it looks familiar, that's because you've seen it in Woody Allen's Manhattan Murder Mystery. Not only was part of the movie filmed here, but Madonna has also posed at the hotel for a photo shoot. Even though this isn't a luxury property, models, artists and musicians are constantly gravitating here. Despite recent renovations, the kitsch still rules the roost. The WWII-era-looking wallpaper and floral bedspreads remain. So do the Bay Windows, which add loads of charm. Rooms now come with basic cable and wireless Internet. The staff promises you won't get stuck in the elevator, à la Woody Allen. Ignore the No Vacancy sign.
