A solid ruby of a hotel in a trendy Chelsea setting.
Though calling your hotel chain GEM could invite some harsh puns from reviewers, we're happy to report that this hotel left us smiling instead of scrambling for our thesaurus. Though, really, we can't walk away without playing on the name a little bit: while this is no sparkling diamond of a property, The GEM Hotel Chelsea is a solid ruby. It's got some depth and a bit of shine, and you can wear it with pretty much everything. And by everything we mean everyone --- gay, straight, families, tourists, business people, whoever ... come on in. Rooms here are not huge, but they're very comfortable. They're light and airy with bold pops of color against clean white walls and bedding. Amenities include flat-screen TVs, complimentary Wi-Fi and robes. Corporate travelers who need room to spread out should opt for a "business" room --- the name says it all, right? The penthouse, featuring a private terrace that most locals would envy, is pretty swell, too. But the hotel's best quality? Definitely the location. Planted at the corner of 22nd Street and Eighth Avenue, the GEM can serve foodie types hankering to try Chelsea's newest restaurants and art fans heading out to hit up all the neighborhood galleries. On-site dining can be enjoyed at Foragers City Market, and late night snackers can stock up on cookies or, if you must, cupcakes --- yep, that trend's still around --- at nearby Billy's Bakery.
