A luxurious bed-and-breakfast for the sophisticated set.

The Inn at Irving Place

There is neither sign nor awning, which is probably one of the reasons rock and fashion royalty flock to these two nineteenth-century townhouses just south of Gramercy Park. Tucked away within them are twelve charming rooms, each named for a neighborhood personality. As for style, think Edith Wharton's "The Age of Innocence." The townhouses’ original architectural details have been retained and restored, including fourteen fireplaces, burled-wood shutters and wood-paneled walls. Amenities are what set these rooms apart from those found at your ordinary B&B. Beds sport Frette linens, and technology hums quietly away: digital cable and wireless Internet. The large bathrooms are luxuriously accented with brass fixtures and ceramic tiles. Services include in-room massage, room service, concierge and complimentary breakfast in bed. To maximize the sophistication --- and sense of romance --- children under twelve are discouraged. Lady Mendl’s serves afternoon tea on period English and French china (reservations required). There are also two other tea rooms; all can be used for private parties from ten to 50. Alas, The Cibar is no longer cigar friendly due to draconian city smoking regulations, but light fare and signature martinis can still be had at this intimate lounge. Note: this is a two-floor walkup without an elevator.
