The Roosevelt Hotel

45 E. 45th St. (Madison Ave.) New York NY

A historic hotel with grand public spaces and a lovely rooftop bar overlooking iconic Grand Central Station.

This grande dame of a hotel, which opened in 1924, welcomes guests back in time with the help of a stunning lobby. Though signs of age are showing a bit on the last renovation, The Roosevelt --- which houses 1,015 rooms --- is still an awfully pretty place. This glorious Italian Renaissance building occupies a full city block just north of Grand Central and features some major architectural highlights. Notable is the Palm Room, the two-story oval-shaped space canopied by a sky-mural ceiling where guests can take afternoon tea. Art Deco design elegance abounds and public areas reflect the classicism of this era as well as contemporary accents that create a thoroughly comfortable atmosphere. Guest rooms feature flat-screen TVs, iPod-dock clock radios, ergonomic desk chairs and Wi-Fi. The rooms are lacking in originality, with their muted art, patterned bedspreads and conservative décor. Fortunately, the original artwork has been retained in the Madison Club Lounge, where guests gather for tangerine-flavored martinis at the 31-foot-long bar. Roosevelt Grill offers American and Continental cuisine. In warmer months, the rooftop mad46 is a pleasant place to relax with a drink. Versatile meeting spaces can equally accommodate a small group or large gathering.
