The Carlton Hotel

88 Madison Ave. (29th St.) New York NY

Old New York has never felt so modern.

David Rockwell, the designer behind Nobu and other top-flight spots, did well by this hundred-plus-year-old building. Without stripping the interior of its classic New York feel, Rockwell turned out a hotel that is pleasing to the modern traveler's eye. The location --- near The Shake Shack's home, Madison Park --- has become fairly hip over the last few years. There's a good chance your temporary neighbors will be Louis Vuitton-luggage-toting hipsters or Europeans sporting stylish eyewear. A great place for people watching, the lobby features crystal chandeliers, a two-story waterfall, a million-dollar Tiffany dome and contemporary chic furnishings. Rockwell's design is also, surprisingly, comfortable and warm, thanks to a natural color palette mixed with lots of mahogany and ultra-suede. The staff is helpful and the guest rooms are noteworthy too. Some are standard city-small, but the marble bathrooms, light colors and 1940s feel of the furnishings make them seem much airier and larger than they are. Accommodations are stocked with free Wi-Fi, Molton Brown bath products, 42-inch flat-screen TVs and down comforters. The hotel's dining venue, Millesime, is a multi-faceted restaurant, bar and music lounge that serves Mediterranean-French-inspired small plates and inventive cocktails in a dining space marked by a century-old mosaic floor, Tiffany skylight, red banquettes and a marble raw bar. An open kitchen gives guests an intimate look at the culinary team behind the scenes. Other above-average amenities include the round-the-clock business and fitness centers. The hotel is also pet-friendly.
