A historic chemists' club transformed into an intimate hotel.

This boutique hotel's blend of old and new manages to create a modern atmosphere without feeling cold. The 1903 Beaux Arts structure’s ornate decorative plasterwork, grand marble staircase and other architectural details have been expertly restored, and the lobby glows with Brazilian walnut floors and sandblasted titanium glass panels. Its location opposite the architectural marvel and rail transportation hub of Grand Central Station puts it in an ideal spot to receive visitors coming to midtown for business or pleasure. The on-premises restaurant, Benjamin Steakhouse, serves prime cuts of steak, seafood and old-fashioned German potatoes. The guest rooms are decorated in rich tones of cream, mauve and amethyst and furnished with ebony-stained furniture. Beds have upholstered headboards and cantilevered night stands on either side, and marble bathrooms contain porcelain bowl-style sinks mounted on granite slabs. The Alchemy Suite is a favorite, with its vaulted ceiling, slender Gothic columns and a stained-glass window depicting symbols and processes associated with alchemy, including the conversion of base metals into gold. Amenities are state-of-the-art, including large TVs, iPods, dual-line telephones with data ports, high-speed Internet access and large safes.
