Best Hip Hotels in New York
A British invasion with exceptional taste and downtown views.
This hotel is British cool. Big time. Crosby Street is the first U.S. property from Firmdale Hotels --- the trendsetting (and slightly cheeky) Brit company behind stunning London properties including Haymarket Hotel and The Soho Hotel. An entrance that is more window than wall welcomes guests. And once inside, the hotel is all about interesting things to look at. As for the service, it's just as stylish. Guests can gaze out on beautiful downtown views from the floor-to-ceiling (and wall-to-wall) windows in most of the guest rooms. The décor blends traditional styles (think wingback chairs) with a mix of modern and classic color palettes and patterns. The 86 custom-designed rooms and suites include amenities such as flat-screen LCD TVs, DVD/CD players, iPod docking stations, Wi-Fi access and luxury bathrooms with Miller Harris bath products. All in all, the place oozes excellent taste. When you're ready to leave your room but don't want to step out into the city, the Drawing Room offers fireplaces and access to a courtyard garden. Or you can enjoy a meal or afternoon tea at The Crosby Bar and Terrace. Though there's no shortage of worthwhile movie theaters to hide out in while visiting NYC, this hotel has one of our favorites. The 100-seat screening room feels very industry. Want in? Reserve a spot for the Sunday night Film Club. While screenings are open to the public, most locals don't know about them so it feels that much more special. Of course, this comes at a price --- but scarcely more than the bad popcorn and overpriced bottled water at other New York theaters.
