The Jane

This sleek West Village budget hotel resides in a former sailors' retreat.

The Jane is a budget hotel with a rich history. The brick property was once a resting stop for sailors, and in 1912 Titanic survivors bedded down here. During the 1980s and ‘90s, the building became the seedy Riverview Hotel, attracting artists and hard-core partiers. But after its 2008 makeover, the Jane might be the coolest, most affordable place to lay your head in the city. Set on the edge of the West Village and the Meatpacking District, this hotel has 200 diminutive rooms. Bedecked in wood and accented with mirrors, they look like ship cabins, recalling the property's past. The guest rooms are fully loaded: free Wi-Fi, telephones (with voicemail), flat-screen TVs, DVD players and iPod docking stations. Many of the accommodations share bathrooms, so make sure to ask for private facilities if you so desire. The lively house restaurant, Café Gitane, serves a well-rounded menu with French, Greek, Egyptian and all-American flavors.
