Washington Square Hotel
Downtown splendor mixing old and new.
This hundred-year-old hotel, overlooking the Square immortalized by Henry James, has plenty of charms. It's in a prime location for anyone interested in the literary side of the city --- i.e. Greenwich Village. On top of that, it's value-priced. The 170 guest rooms are distinctively decorated with suede-like mauve walls, dark wood furnishings and, in some, pillow top mattresses. Bath facilities have also been revamped with mahogany storage cubicles. Playful touches include faux baby ostrich leather headboards. The North Square Restaurant offers well prepared meals, and the North Square Lounge continues in its tradition of supporting music and musicians from Bob Dylan and Joan Baez to Bo Diddley and Nora Jones. Be forewarned: The hotel is so popular that management advises making reservations two to three months in advance.
