Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club
The granddaddy of grand tradition in the heart of Duke University.
Situated on the original homestead (now the Duke University campus) of the Duke family, founders of the American Tobacco Company, this hotel is one class act. It's very clubby and Old English in its style, and its lobby and hallways are filled with Duke family memorabilia. More subdued than the public areas, the 271 bedrooms and suites are pretty, Southern, traditional and not too fussy. They come with 100% cotton linens, complimentary high-speed internet access and windows that actually open onto the fresh air, not to mention views of the grounds or golf course. Ah, the golf course. It was designed by Robert Trent Jones and redesigned by his son, and there are half a dozen PGA pros on hand to help you with your stroke. The formal Fairview Dining Room offers an extensive wine list, and afternoon tea is served in the sunroom Tuesday through Sunday. Fitness buffs will be happy to know they can use the health club; there's also a three mile running path through Duke Forest.
