The E.J. Bowman House

2672 Lititz Pike (Petersburg Rd.) Lancaster PA

One of the finer choices for B&B lodging in Amish Country.

Among the numerous B&Bs in the Amish Country of Lancaster County, this one stands out. Its warm yellow, Italianate Victorian-style façade is both refined and welcoming, while the interior reflects the home’s rich architectural history. Built in the 1860s, it was purchased by innkeepers Alice and E.Y. Murphey in 1999, who worked to have it masterfully restored. Among its notable features is the rooftop balustrade deck. The house is the winner of numerous local historic preservation and garden awards. Bedrooms are prettily decorated, and the Bowman Suite is a standout. It is a lovely example of understated elegance, with its painted open-beam ceiling, collection of family antiques, gauzy curtains and ornate wooden headboard. Heated tile floors highlight the private baths in each of the rooms; all accommodations also enjoy individual air conditioning and color TVs with VCRs. Guests are invited to make themselves at home, whether they are curled up on the enclosed second-floor balcony with a good book or hanging out with the house dog. A nice introduction to local history can be found in the foyer and formal staircase area, which is adorned with 14 murals depicting late 19th-century life in Lancaster County. A full gourmet breakfast is served daily.
