Built in 1914 by a local grocer as a residence hotel for his buyers (and named for its riverfront surroundings reminiscent of Cuba’s Caribbean landscape), Hotel Havana provides an elegant and charismatic retreat on San Antonio’s North River Walk. In 2010 the property underwent a full renovation under the guidance of hotelier Liz Lambert, who specializes in redesigning unique lodgings. Guest rooms and suites feature Bastrop pine wood floors, antique furniture, Cuban artwork and Turkish rugs, as well as custom-made bed linens and bathrooms stocked with Red Flower amenities. They also come with mini-bars stocked with international and local snacks, drinks and souvenirs, complimentary Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs with iPod connectivity. Hotel Havana is home to Ocho restaurant, beautifully situated in a glass-and-steel conservatory, as well as a downstairs lounge with velvet couches and leather club chairs. Executive chef Toby Soto utilizes the hotel’s pan-Latin history to color a lively menu for breakfast, lunch, dinner and late night meals; the impressive wine list features selections from Spain, France and South America. Ocho also provides room service until 10 p.m. on weekdays and later on weekends; room service meals can be enjoyed in-room or on the patio.
