The Hotel Modern
A contemporary stay on Lee Circle that includes one of best bars in the city.
It's easily apparent that the sleek Hotel Modern is pet-friendly the moment a guest checks in at the podium-like structure that replaces a typical hotel desk. Meet Scarlett the Eclectus parrot, a crimson-plumed bird that entertains in residence --- just one of the cool things about this compact Warehouse District property. All of the guest rooms have eclectic furnishings and bright accents, but when they're described as small, believe it. Dorm room sizing can work for one or two very close friends; otherwise upgrade to a larger space. The rooms all have great amenities, such as large flat-screen TVs, Keurig brewing machines for coffee and tea, and free Wi-Fi. There's a very good restaurant on-site, named for the former Tivoli carousel that used to sit on this spot along with the imposing statue of General Lee that now commands the Circle. Bellocq bar is fantastic, paying tribute to photographer E. J. Bellocq, who secretly photographed the madams of pre-prohibition New Orleans. Visitors can enjoy original cocktail creations from Neal Bodenheimer, Kirk Estopinal and Matthew Kohnke, the founders of Cure and Cane & Table, also cool places for a drink. Located on the St. Charles Streetcar Line, the 135-room Hotel Modern is walking distance or an easy cab ride away from most of the city's main attractions.
