The Paper Factory
A Long Island City landmark turns over a new page as a modern boutique hotel.
Everything old is new again at the Paper Factory, and this industrial space has never looked so good. Developers have reinvented the former paper factory as a modern showplace through a combination of innovative design and thoughtful preservation. The results of these efforts are intriguing --- for example, the Industrial Revolution-era paper machines that once hummed along here have found new life as part of the hotel’s creative décor, and the lobby showcases unconventional elements like walls created by old elevator doors and floors laminated in old New York City newspapers. The 122 urban loft-style rooms and suites are spread across five floors, and all are furnished with free Wi-Fi and flat-screen, high-def televisions; suites offer the added bonus of kitchenettes that include microwaves, stoves, ovens, refrigerators and toasters. Sleek furnishings, neutral colors, clean lines and lots of airy windows create a sense of sanctuary to soothe road-weary travelers. Nearby attractions such as the Noguchi Museum, 5 Pointz, the Museum of Moving Space and MoMA P.S. 1 encourage guests to get out and make the most of this diverse, culture-rich neighborhood. It’s also easy to get to area beaches, recreational bike trails and golf courses; Manhattan is just a quick commute away.
