Canyon Ranch Lodge
This authentic western ranch packs a heck of a wallop.
Owned by the Wallop family since the late 1800s, this lodge epitomizes the meaning of getting away from it all. It's set on a private, 3,000-acre reserve and attracts diehard outdoor enthusiasts. Summer draws large fly-fishing crowds. Wildflower season in May and June is popular with hikers and water colorists. While out wandering you may see whitetail deer, elk, moose, bobcats or mountain lions. For sporting types, the ranch offers upland game bird hunting (pheasant, grouse and partridge), as well as wild turkey hunts. Surprisingly, given the isolated location, guests can enjoy two spectacular area golf courses. As for the accommodations, the lodge is what you'd expect (and want)---a rustic showcase for lots of timber, with antlers mounted on the walls. A three-night minimum stay is required, and all stays include breakfast, lunch, dinner and guides. For those who want complete seclusion, there is the seasonal Wallop Family Cabin, offering views that sweep for 100 miles.
