History and a great location are the draws at this wonderful Taos hotel.

Luminaries ranging from Greta Garbo to Robert Redford have spent the night at the Historic Taos Inn, which also—allegedly—continues to host some friendly ghosts. This charming, funky hotel that's just steps from the Taos Plaza and its many galleries and restaurants is right along the town's main drag, and it's known as much as a place to sip margaritas and eat fine contemporary Southwestern fare as it is a place to spend the night. The property opened in 1936 and has added some newer sections over the years—there are 44 rooms set among four buildings. Those in the original main building are the most interesting, with their beam ceilings, thick adobe walls, and authentic Southwestern furnishings and artwork. Rooms in the Sandoval House are lighter and airier, and the newer Helen's House has some of the fanciest rooms on the property. A local tradition in Taos is sipping cocktails while listening to live music in the high-ceilinged bar. In the restaurant, you can feast on such delicious fare as organic fillet of beef with a roasted-tomato demiglace and, at weekend brunch, blue-corn and blueberry pancakes.
