Authorities in England considered this film so graphic that the movie was banned there for decades.

"Freaks" is a film that could never be made today. It stars real "born freaks" (an obsolete sideshow term) including microencephalitics (better known as "pinheads"), the arm- and legless Human Torso and conjoined twins so disturbing-looking they reportedly made F. Scott Fitzgerald throw up. Not only was it received poorly when released, but authorities in England considered the imagery so graphic and exploitative that the movie was banned there for decades. Director Tod Browning had earlier enjoyed huge success with his "Dracula" collaborations, but the controversial "Freaks" proved to be the undoing of his career. Audiences rediscovered the dark tale of revenge in the 1960s and it's been a midnight movie favorite ever since.
