Castillo de la Real Fuerza

Castillo de la Real Fuerza is the city's oldest fortress.

The watchtower of the Castillo de la Real Fuerza

Considered a UNESCO World Heritage site, Castillo de la Real Fuerza dates back to the 16th century and was built to protect against pirate attacks. Its structure is similar to the fortresses being built in Spain in the Medieval Ages. Over the centuries, the structure has served different purposes and today it's the Museo de Navegación (Maritime Museum). The museum displays exhibits that chronical Cuba's maritime past from pre-Columbian days to the 18th century.

Museum highlights includes a large model of the Santisima Trinidad located on the main floor. There is an interactive touch screen that gives insight into life aboard the 18th-century ship.
