El Museo del Oro

View the largest collection of gold artifacts in the world here.

One of the historical artifacts on display at the Museum of Gold in Bogotá

El Museo del Oro (Museum of Gold) was created by the Banco de la Republica in 1939, which purchased these precious gold objects from private collectors, even from tomb looters to avoid their dispersion. The collection consisting of thousands of pre-Columbian gold items is fascinating.

The museum is spread across three floors, with the second and third levels featuring the permanent collection. Visitors can also enjoy refreshments and a meal at the museum's café and restaurant, or buy gifts at the souvenir shop. One of the most famous pieces on display is the Muisca Raft, also referred to as the El Dorado Raft. This historical artifact was discovered in 1969, which represents the ceremony inducting the new ruler of the land, surrounded by his principal chieftains, all adorned in gold and feathers.
