- Murals of La Jolla
Murals of La Jolla
La Jolla first came on the scene artistically with the creation of the Green Dragon Colony, established by Anna Held in 1894.
It was Ellen Browning Scripps who put La Jolla on the map as a contender in the worldwide art community in the early 1900s, both philanthropically and by nurturing and commissioning works by local artists. Art continues to be an important component of La Jolla's identity. In 2010, the La Jolla Community Foundation commissioned a project of murals to be installed throughout the downtown area. Its goal is to have interesting art accessible to visitors and the local community alike, to provoke thought and spark dialogue.
Murals are abstract or impressionistic. They can blend into the La Jolla skyline, or in one case, not seem like a mural at all, but a billboard ad. Only when you see that the "ad" is for a cure to remove tear stains do you realize that it is one of the Murals of La Jolla. The murals are all located in the downtown art district area of La Jolla within a few blocks of each other. Finding them all is a fun excursion, similar to that of a scavenger hunt. The first two murals were painted directly on the walls of privately owned businesses. Subsequently, murals have been printed on vinyl and installed for a duration of two years.
