In Support of the Santa Monica Symphony Orchestra

As a food critic, I am often asked if I were to go on a “date”, what restaurant he should take me to. My answer is clear: a concert — but only classical music. Naturally, I was very happy to be invited to the 69th season premiere of the Santa Monica Symphony Orchestra last weekend.

I had the privilege of going backstage and interviewing Guido Lamell, the music director and conductor. He has also been a violinist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic since 1979. KUSC Radio host Rich Capparela made the introductions of Santa Monica Mayor Pam O’Connor and violinist Roberto Cani, who played Tchaikovsky’s violin concerto in D major, Op. 35 on a 1714 Stradivarius!

Orchestra president Michael Miller reminded all of us that since the concerts from the Santa Monica Symphony are free to the public, the organization needs the support of the community. “Without the ongoing support of you, our valued community, we are unable to continue to provide the gift of free beautiful classical music,” he said. He also thanked all the great musicians for their devoted time.

I hope these few lines will help the public discover —- or rediscover —- this orchestra that makes classical music accessible to all.

The next performances of the Orchestra will be on December 14, 2013, January 18, March 9, and May 24, 2014.
